The Nature and Work of the Holy Spirit
By Christopher White
The Nature and Work of the Holy Spirit is a work deeply rooted in Scripture. It is an in-depth study of the role the Holy Spirit has played in the Bible’s Old and New Testaments. As the Word of God declares, this world is under the sway of the evil one. But God has been at work all along, drawing both Jew and Gentile away from the ways of sin and death and into the paths of eternal life, through the work of His Holy Spirit.
Jesus gave His life on the cross for our salvation, but He also declared regarding the subsequent coming of the Holy Spirit, “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” (John 16:8) This is the primary work of the Spirit of the Lord: to open our eyes and hearts to our desperate need for God, to draw us into relationship with our Creator, and to transform us step-by-step into the image of Jesus. As 1 John 3:2-3 also declares, if we allow the Lord to have His way in our lives, “when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”
In this book, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, as well as the fruits and gifts of the Spirit, are explored at length. Ultimately, as the book also emphasizes, the work of the Spirit is to prepare a church, the bride of Christ drawn out of every nation, kindred, tongue, and tribe of this world. The Holy Spirit empowers those who yield their lives to God to become builders of the Kingdom of Heaven, the only kingdom that will never pass away. This book contains many historical quotes and stories from the likes of C.T. Studd, D.L. Moody, the Cambridge Seven, Charles Finney, and William Booth—among others. It also includes anecdotes and experiences from Christopher White’s life and ministry as an evangelist and teacher. As one reviewer has written,
“Especially impressive is the integrity with which Mr. White walks into numerous topics so frequently dominated by both confusion and heresy – and there he boldly, appropriately, accurately shines the Biblical lights on our otherwise confusing paths ahead of us.”
”This book is a treasure on the ministry of the Holy Spirit from a Biblical basis. I thought I was well versed in the theology of the Holy Spirit, but the book has opened a thorough and in-depth understanding of the important doctrines in the Word that is unlike anything I have ever read. It is a textbook on the work of the Holy Spirit that I know I will be referencing numerous times in sermon preparation and in my future manuscript writing. Thank you, Brother White, for the effort you put into this treasure of truth.

”Mr. White draws deeply from virtually every book of the Bible to reveal to us the marvelous Person of the Holy Spirit. His careful, detailed Biblical exposition provides firm grounding for our deepening experience – and for our submission to the authority and wisdom – of God’s Spirit. Especially impressive is the integrity with which Mr. White walks into numerous topics so frequently dominated by both confusion and heresy – and there he boldly, appropriately, accurately shines the Biblical lights on our otherwise confusing paths ahead of us.

”These days it seems like the Holy Spirit is one of the most forgotten persons in the Church. The Nature and Work of the Holy Spirit reminds us why He is so desperately needed in the Church today. Christopher White’s book is yet another gift to the Body of Christ!

”I read your book manuscript this weekend. It was thoroughly biblical; great scholarship while being very readable; and very comprehensive. I enjoyed your personal stories and appropriate use of historical stories like the Cambridge Seven. I especially enjoyed chapters 13 and 14. I’m a D.L. Moody fan so was pleased to see him quoted throughout the manuscript. And it certainly is seeker friendly. Your bibliography is a collection of books that should be in the library of every serious believer. Well done.

”We need a book that comprehensively teaches about the Holy Spirit. Not just spiritual gifting, although that’s important. Not just the filling of the Spirit, although that’s inspirational. All Scripture, Old Testament and the New, sings about the Spirit! I want to know how the Holy Spirit is present in the epic sweep of God’s plan for mankind, and I want to know everything about the Holy Spirit in my life. That’s what Chris White has done: he has covered the whole story. His work is important and inspirational. It’s also written in a thoughtful, sensitive voice I can listen to and trust.

”Not only is Evangelist Christopher N. White a wonderful soul and believer in Christ, but he never disappoints when he composes various works of Christian literature to help build up the Body of Christ! His latest contribution to us all, The Nature and Work of the Holy Spirit, really arrives in a time where the world appears to be devoid of His Holy presence, power and compassion. Evg. White’s broad array of topics covering both simple and complex aspects of our dynamic God in the person of the Holy Spirit; really captivates and stirs the reader to dig deeper into the richness of the Lord. If you truly desire to discover more about the limitless power of God, this is definitely the right book for you!

”I have known Chris for decades as a man of God with deep integrity and a heart for prayer. How these qualities shine through in this massive and awesome work! I love how his teachings stay in line with God’s Word, and how they are intertwined with great quotes and amazing, inspirational testimonies. I will be referring to this book over and over in the years to come as I desire to also know and walk in step with the Holy Spirit more and more. The Nature and Work of the Holy Spirit will assist us in this endeavor, for sure. Thank you, my friend, for the gift of this book!

”Chris White has thoroughly captured the role and essence of the Holy Spirit in this book. As he takes the reader through Scripture, you will find yourself going deeper with the Lord in understanding the role of the Spirit of God. I was especially moved by the explanation of the Spirit’s primary work in our lives, woven throughout the New and Old Testaments: ‘He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.’ This is a must read for everyone.

”As Christians we all believe, at least doctrinally, in the power and centrality of the Holy Spirit in our lives. But curiously the Holy Spirit has today become almost a neglected subject, perhaps even a mystery. In this rich, vital work, Chris White delves deeply into the wondrous dimensions of the Holy Spirit, bringing to us a fresh reverence for our God ‘whose paths are beyond tracing out.’ It is a must read during these increasingly unsettling days.
