War on the Saints Study Course

By Ernest B. Rockstad

This study guide contains questions for each chapter of the unabridged edition of War on the Saints by Jessie Penn-Lewis with Evan Roberts. First, read through the portion assigned for the lesson. Then find the answer to the questions and write them on a separate sheet of paper. Use the book in answering the questions. Make the answers precise, not giving more or less than what is asked for. The answer may be in the words of the book. Writing the answers will help fix the trust in your mind. And when you are through, you will have a valuable condensation of the book.

    1. The textbook for this course is the unabridged edition of War on the Saints by Jessie Penn-Lewis with Evan Roberts. Page numberings are for the Eighth and Ninth Editions. The Roman numeral page designations in Lesson 1 are for the Introductory Chapter. We also have a course based on the Abridged Edition which bears the title “The Christian’s Warfare.”
    2. It is recommended that this course be studied only by those who have an understanding of the believer’s union with Christ. If you find the material to be difficult or beyond your grasp, we advise you to secure our course in the Normal Christian Life and complete this before proceeding further.
    3. If you are experiencing serious problems, it may be advisable for you to begin your studies with one of the later lessons which could be of immediate help to you. If you are in need of immediate relief, start with Lesson 19. After completing Lesson 27, return to Lesson 1.
    4. It is important that you read carefully the INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS on the next page before beginning the actual study.
    5. The procedure to follow is first to read through the portion assigned for the lesson. Then find the answers to the questions and write them on a separate sheet of paper. Use the book in answering the questions. Make the answers precise, not giving more or less than what is asked for. The answer may be in the words of the book. Writing the answers will help fix the truths in your mind. And when you are through you will have a valuable condensation of the book.
    6. Be sure to study prayerfully and in search for the truth, not just to find answers to the questions! The very truth you need may not be touched on by the question.

You will very likely meet with opposition in various forms to keep you from pursuing these studies or even reading the book. Claim the enabling grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, resist Satan as the hinderer, and press on to learn the truth that sets free. In the original edition of WAR ON THE SAINTS, the writers told how the truths set forth in the book were gained through deep suffering and were written in the teeth of terrible opposition by the Satanic “world-rulers” (Eph. 6:12). They warned that these same Satanic powers would as intensely contest the reading of its pages.
You may not agree with all the terminology used in this book. Do not allow this to keep you from receiving the truth that it contains. Also do not be dismayed by cumbersome sentences and commas which do not belong. Please remember that many people have been rescued from anguish and bondage through applying the principles they have learned in this book. (See, for example, the experience of Lulu Jordan Cheesman, as set forth in her book From the Snare of the Fowler, available from us.)
Do not allow opinions you may hold to keep you from truth which can bring emancipation to you and/or new hope and release to others through you. Keep in mind that the authors wrote from experience as well as knowledge and that they were godly people who knew what it was to walk and minister in the power of the Holy Spirit.
We would urge your careful attention to the following admonitions given in the original edition of WAR ON THE SAINTS:
As the devil requires lies in the minds of men for the holding of his kingdom, so God needs TRUTH in the mind for His working through the believer. Therefore, recognize the opposition of the adversary and be on the alert to turn into instant prayer all that you need.
Ask God to make you unbiased toward the truth, to reveal His mind to you about it, and to make you spiritual enough to understand it.
Because the world-rulers will scheme to hinder knowledge being obtained which gives complete victory over them:
  1. Beware of a feeling of disinclination to read.
  2. Beware of falling an easy prey to the criticism of others.
  3. Beware of pressing claims which keep you from having time to read and meditate over the truths which are absolutely necessary for you to know a full life of victory.
  4. Beware of easily forgetting what you read and dropping into abeyance the measure of truth which you do not understand, for this forgetfulness ends in victory for the foe.
Your use of the textbook for the enlightenment of others will also be contested. Therefore, let prayer precede all transmitting of truth to others.
Finally, remember that a little knowledge of the devil makes men tremble before him, but full knowledge enables the believer to overcome, as he fearlessly depends upon God for victory over the wiles of the Deceiver of the whole inhabited earth, through the Blood of the Lamb (Rev. 12:11).
The whole world lies in the Evil One, but greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us! Hallelujah!
